Brigadier General (Ret.) Alfred (“Al”) Eugene Tobin, 85 years old, of Cary, North Carolina, passed away on March 23, 2023, at the home that he shared with his wife, Katherine (“Katy”) Nicholas Tobin.

Al was born on November 17, 1937 in Burlington Junction, Missouri. The fifth of seven children, Al learned the value of hard work at an early age on his family’s farm. He graduated from Maryville High School and went on to college at Northwest Missouri State. Following college, Al enlisted in the United States Army. He graduated from Officer Candidate School and remained in the military for his entire career. At the end of his military career, Al served as the Commanding General 60th Troop Command for the North Carolina National Guard. Once retired, he filled his days with travel, golf and spending time with his family and friends.

Al and Katy married in 1963 and were married for nearly sixty years. Al is survived by his wife, Katy, by his daughter, Darby Godfrey of Georgetown, South Carolina, by his son Jay Tobin of Raleigh, North Carolina, by his daughter Jill Kelso and her husband David of Raleigh, North Carolina, and by his son Sam Tobin and his wife Doris of Cary, North Carolina. Al is survived by his nine grandchildren, Ashley Godfrey, Jason Godfrey, Ryan Godfrey, Mary Stuart Tolson and her husband Holden, Georgia Kelso, Reid Tobin, Erin Tobin, Mary Callan Kelso and Hank Kelso. Al is survived by his three great-grandchildren, Noah Godfrey, Haven Godfrey and Sawyer Tolson.

Al is also survived by his sister Teresa Hackett, his sister Kathleen Dolph and her husband Tom, his brother Bill Tobin and his wife Dusene, his brother Vince Tobin and his wife Kathy, and many nieces, nephews and their spouses and children. Al was preceded in death by his brother Paul Tobin and his wife Melba, his sister Louise Madden and her husband Jim, and his brother-in-law Bill Hackett.

The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 31, 2023 at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church located at 804 High House Road in Cary, North Carolina. There will be a reception at the church following the funeral mass. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home located at 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Cary, North Carolina.
