John Edward Young, age 97, of Cary, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at the Durham Veterans Hospital.

John Edward Young, 97, of Cary. Son of the late Louis Andrew Young and Helen (Chappel) Young. Born on June 9,1927 in a town called Mexico, in Oswego County, and was raised on a nearby farm in upstate New York. John skipped two grades in High School and enlisted in the US Marines in 1943 during WWII at the age of 16, he is the recipient of two purple hearts and a bronze star. He served in the Battle of Iwo Jima and at Okinawa in Japan. He had tours of duty in China and later in the Korean Conflict.

John met his future wife at General Electric Corporation in Syracuse, New York. He and Amelia (Millie) L. Ottoman married on September 10,1949. John started working at IBM in 1955 at the Endicott, NY facility and then transferred with the company where he and his family moved to Cary in 1965 as part of the IBM migration. He worked as an Electrical Safety Engineer until he retired from the company in 1990 with 35 years of service. During their retirement John and Millie spent the next 25 years traveling in their Motorhome throughout Florida, when back in Cary they loved taking part in all kinds of dance clubs and Millie would make sure they looked the part by sewing their costumes. In a second career after IBM, John decided to become a rental property owner and also the part-time handyman for those properties, he was a true "jack of all trades" and could fix anything! As time went on there were fewer trips to Florida and more trips to the local McDonald’s on Walnut St. in Cary, where each morning gathering consisted of breakfast and fellowship. John and Millie have met some wonderful friends there down through the years and appreciate the continued relationships that they have made.

John was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Helen Young. His brother, William Young and sister, Helen Young Riddle.

John is survived by his wife, Ameila "Millie" (Ottoman) Young. His children; Gary E. Young and wife Lee of Willow Spring, NC. Linda Young Bridges also of Willow Spring, NC. James A. Young and his significant other Betsy Clark, of Morrisville, NC. Sandra Young Jenkins and husband Russell of Morrisville, NC. Four Grandchildren, Cheryl, Corey, Ashlee and Andrew. Four Great Grandchildren, Scott, Christian, Adrianna and Leighton and one Great Great Grandchild, Harmony.
