Rest in Peace

John Thomas Haggerty

October 16, 1936 – July 8, 2018

Haggerty

John Thomas Haggerty, 81, of Cary, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, died July 8, 2018, after a long, valiant battle with heart disease and cancer.

The son of the late Lansford and Margaret (Hafner) Haggerty, John was born October 16, 1936, in Rochester, Minnesota, where he grew up.

He married his best friend and devoted wife, DaVeda, in 1955, beginning a long and happy marriage-a blessing of love that lasted almost 63 years.

He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years, traveling to locations near and far in his service for the country. Later, he continued to serve his community in Cary as an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Club. He also volunteered with the N.C. AAU Swimming Association during the time his children were swimming competitively.

John worked at IBM for 29 years, beginning his career at Research Triangle Park and retiring as a project manager in 1994.

A lifelong Catholic, John loved God and his family-his wife, children and grandchildren were his steadfast joy. He was always ready to share a laugh, a conversation, and helpful advice to others. He was interested in people and showed it in his care for friends and family. He loved the beauty of the beach, the fun of watching soccer (especially when his grandson played for Carolina), the excitement of air races in Nevada, and playing with his dog, Doogie. He lived each day to the fullest and with a sense of enjoyment that was apparent to all. He spent as much time as possible with the people that he loved, and they loved him in return.

John is survived by his wife, his children, Wendy (Scott) Busby and Jeff Haggerty; his grandchildren, Brooks Haggerty and Erin (Bob) Dowgiallo; and his brothers and brother-in-laws, Robert (Patricia) Haggerty, Charles (Carleen) Haggerty, Bill Healy and Ernie Beilke. He was predeceased by his brother James (Tykie) Haggerty, sister Patty Ann Healy and sister Mary Beilke.

The funeral Mass for John will take place Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Cary. Interment will be at the columbarium at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cary.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in John's name may be made to the Cary Area Emergency Medical Services, 107 Medcon Court, Cary, NC 27511.
