Rich DeLong, age 60, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 13, 2020 following a short illness. He was born September 16, 1959 in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of Donald F. and Juanita G. (Buck) DeLong.

Rich followed a family naval tradition of his father as well as his ancestor, Arctic explorer George Washington DeLong. He was a 1982 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, receiving a commission as Ensign in the U.S. Navy and serving in the Navy Submarine Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and serving on the USS Mariano G. Vallejo. Rich was the recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for meritorious action. Following his naval service, he was employed in the nuclear-power industry.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and car racing. Rich was a Life Member of VFW Post 7383 in Cary, North Carolina.

Survivors include two daughters, Ashton and Andrea DeLong; two sisters, Donna (Arlis Overstreet) DeLong and Sharon (Will) Webb; brother David DeLong; five nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and extended family.

Cremation has taken place. His remains will be interred at the U.S. Naval Academy - date to be determined.
